Aspen Publishing is seeking a Senior Content Manager to be a part of our growing Production Team. This position is based in our Burlington, MA, office with a hybrid office/work-from home schedule - we will consider a remote hire for the right candidate. You will work in partnership with the Editorial, Production, Marketing, Manufacturing, and Digital Teams to deliver on Aspen’s mission to be the best in legal education publishing.

The ideal candidate will be able to prioritize and manage time effectively with an eye toward creating efficiencies, have excellent business and interpersonal communication skills, and be flexible and willing to embrace change in process and workplace practices. TITLE: Senior Content Manager (Production)
REPORTS TO: Director of Production & Manufacturing
DEPARTMENT: Editorial & Production
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
LOCATION: Burlington, MA (remote for the right candidate)

POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for independently managing the full production process for a list of projects from manuscript to publication (print and ePub), adhering to schedule, internal specifications and requirements, quality standards, and budget to achieve editorial goals; overseeing work of onshore and offshore vendors and freelancers through close monitoring of schedules, quality, and communication, and escalating issues appropriately; building and maintaining collaborative relationships with internal stakeholders--editorial, marketing, digital content, and manufacturing teams--and vendors to ensure project objectives are met; mentoring junior staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage production of a list of titles, either directly or by overseeing offshore full-service vendors; Serve as the primary liaison between authors, editors, and suppliers during production and oversee all stages, including composition, art production, and the work of freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers, to ensure the timely delivery of high-quality print and digital textbooks and ancillaries
  • Assess scope and needs of projects and collaborate with internal and external teams to meet editorial, design, workflow, schedule, quality, and cost requirements for successful launch of project
  • Monitor quality at all stages of production, including review of copyediting samples and sample pages, to ensure the required standards are met
  • Maintain schedule adherence by tracking the progress of titles through production and problem solving as needed to keep projects on track; Communicate changes promptly to internal stakeholders
  • Actively collaborate with digital team to confirm requirements for deliverables and to ensure quality and schedule goals are met for all formats
  • Review project documentation for accuracy and maintain data integrity in internal product tracking systems
  • Proactively mitigate risks by resolving questions and problems and independently analyzes and addresses more complex issues
  • Quickly identify and solve problems as they arise to avoid delays; Escalate any serious or complex issues that require further attention
  • Assist in reviewing and creating program guidelines (including process documents, style sheets, vendor standards, server and sftp folder structure) and make suggestions for best practices
  • In collaboration with the Director, generate ideas for increased efficiency in the production process
  • Check vendor invoices and ensure accuracy for payment approval
  • Always represent Aspen Publishing in a professional and competent manner
  • Proactively pursue professional development activities
  • Manage time and company resources appropriately
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably Journalism/Communications/English or equivalent
  • 10+ years educational publishing, with a focus on project management, or related experience
  • Deep understanding of book production process
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage high-priority projects with demanding schedules
  • Experience overseeing offshore full-service production vendors
  • Strong copyediting and proofreading skills
  • Able to predict, identify, and independently resolve issues in a timely and effective manner
  • Skilled at working in a team environment, developing collaborative and productive relationships, and effectively directing outside vendors and freelancers
  • Ability to adopt and implement new processes, procedures, and standards in an environment of continuous improvement and innovation
  • Able to provide training and constructive feedback to less experienced team members
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel, Word) and Adobe Acrobat, SFTP
  • Familiarity with DevOps, Firebrand Title Management, InDesign a plus but not required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, English required
  • Strong presentation skills
